A Dover man, Amir Watts, was sentenced on March 19 to 150 months in federal prison after being convicted of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited. U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika handed down the sentence.
The case stems from an investigation in which Watts, age 35, was arrested while on his way to sell two pounds of methamphetamine to an undercover officer. According to court documents, prior to his arrest, Watts had sold increasing quantities of methamphetamine and a firearm to the same undercover officer.
U.S. Attorney Bejamin L. Wallace said, “Guns and drugs are a lethal combination. This defendant trafficked in both. Judge Noreika’s just sentence appropriately reflects the dangerousness of Amir Watts’ conduct. I extend my sincere thanks to our law enforcement partners—and particularly to the courageous undercover officer—whose excellent work helped bring Watts to justice.”
Thomas Hodnett, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration Philadelphia Field Division, said, “Watts’ sentence should send a powerful message: justice will prevail against those who threaten the safety and stability of our communities. This sentence is a testament to the commitment and seamless collaboration between Federal, State, and Local Law Enforcement. Together, we are dismantling violent criminal networks.”
The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Delaware State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Claudia L. Pare prosecuted the case.
