The United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware announced on Apr. 15 the death of Judge John T. Dorsey, who passed away following a battle with cancer.

Dorsey’s passing marks the loss of a respected figure in both the legal community and public service. He joined the court in 2019 after a notable career in private practice and served as Chief Judge from 2024 to 2025.

Dorsey’s life included military service, having served in the United States Army after high school and later as a missile officer in the United States Air Force, which he joined after attending college on the G.I. Bill. He also worked as Delaware state director for then-Senator Joseph R. Biden and was a candidate for Attorney General of Delaware in 1998. Before his appointment to the bench, Dorsey was partner and General Counsel at Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor in Wilmington.

He is survived by his wife Sylvia, son Benjamin, daughter Christina (Ryan), and granddaughter Nora. The court expressed its condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Funeral arrangements will be announced when available.
