A Wilmington man pleaded guilty on Mar. 18 to possessing a firearm as a prohibited individual, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Benjamin L. Wallace and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Baltimore Special Agent in Charge Charles Doerrer.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address gun possession by individuals with prior felony convictions. The plea was accepted by U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika.
According to court documents, members of the Wilmington Police Department were patrolling near S. Harrison Street and Maryland Avenue when they observed a car committing traffic violations. Officers stopped the vehicle and identified Ikeem McDole, 32, as one of the passengers. McDole attempted to flee but was apprehended at the scene. During a search, officers found a loaded Smith & Wesson firearm concealed in his jacket. Due to previous felony convictions, McDole was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
McDole faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison for possessing a firearm as a prohibited person. However, actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum allowed by law. Sentencing is scheduled for July 21, 2026, with the final decision resting with the federal district court judge after considering U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The ATF investigated the case with assistance from the Wilmington Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Thurstlic-O’Neill is prosecuting.
