A Wilmington man, Andre McDougal, was sentenced on Mar. 10 to 37 months in federal prison for possessing ammunition as a convicted felon, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Benjamin L. Wallace of the District of Delaware and Special Agent in Charge Charles Doerrer of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Baltimore office.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address gun-related offenses involving individuals with prior felony convictions.
Court documents show that on June 15, 2024, officers from the Wilmington Police Department attempted to stop a car due to suspected illegal window tinting. The driver, later identified as McDougal, fled from police before crashing into a commercial fence and then a residential building. After a brief foot chase, police arrested McDougal and found approximately 50 rounds of ammunition in his vehicle during a lawful search. Due to multiple prior felony convictions, McDougal was prohibited from possessing ammunition.
U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika imposed the sentence. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Laksin prosecuted it.
